The mandatory religious prohibitions on this  important day in Balinese culture include no pleasure (Amati Lelangon), no traffic (Amati Lelungan),  no fire (Amati Geni), and no work (Amati Karya). 

A night before Nyepi Day, March 21st, 2023, is Pengerupukan Day, when the Bhuta Yajna Ritual is  performed to vanquish the negative elements and create a balance with God, mankind, and nature.  Devout Hindu Balinese villages usually make Ogoh-Ogoh, demonic statues symbolizing negative  elements.
