INTERVIEW WITH ORIOL MONTAL – GENERAL MANAGER OF THE WESTIN RESORT NUSA DUA, BALI
What does a day-in-the-life of a General Manager look like for an international luxury hotel chain?
Every day is different, so I need to be open to dealing with different people and unexpected situations. Balanced leadership is key to the success of any hotel. It is also important to be hands on and be present in the operational side of things. But in today’s world, it is essential to have a solid understanding of Sales and Marketing, plus Finance and Revenue Management. I love my job because it is fun, challenging and every single day brings new experiences and challenges. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

I am the proud leader of a dedicated team. At The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali, we always find creative yet inspiring programs to present to our guests and local community. Our focuses have always been towards wellbeing, family and not to forget the island’s pride – Bali International Convention Centre. We closed 2019 having conducted many great programs and we are looking forward to continuing the excitement throughout 2020. We will begin the New Year on a high note by presenting our 3rd Rewind & Replay music concert – the reunion of Indonesia’s legendary band Dewa 19 with their former singer Once Mekel. The opening act, RAN, will appeal to younger concertgoers with a medley of popular songs. This year we are already planning a number of uplifting events, including something special for International Women’s Day and we will also celebrate wellness in June. As for dining experiences, our Executive Assistant Manager, Manoj Rawat and his culinary team will continue to satisfy appetites, while our award-winning Heavenly Spa will indulge travelers and inspire them with wellness program led exclusive by our resident Wellness Manager, Jitendra Pokhriyal.
Having worked at several Marriott brands around world, which Marriott’s property do you like the most?
It is impossible for me to choose only one hotel. I think that depending on my needs, and depending on the purpose of my travel I would choose one or another. Many times of the year I travel with my family thus my needs are very different than when I travel by myself. What I like from Marriott is the variety of brand we have. For any traveler around the world there is no reason why they should choose at any time outside of our portfolio.
You have accomplished so much during your career, and awarded a Marriott Leadership Award 2015 Asia Pacific. What do you think is the most important quality to have to be a great leadership?
The values that I believe are key to being a successful leader are; perseverance, consistency, being humble and sincere.
How do you compete with many competitors in the hospitality industry?
As Mr. Marriott would say, “put people first”. I am a true believer that everything starts with taking good care of your team members, providing training and opportunities for them to grow. At the same time, it is important to create a culture of innovation so that your products continue to improve and evolve. For example, over the past few months at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali, we have successfully launched a new concept for our Sunday Brunch at Prego called “Brunch Infinito”. We have also rebranded Velada as a family-friendly venue with a fun sports theme and pub food.
What are the top highlights of your professional journey? What doorways has it opened up?
I have been working for 24 years for Marriott International. To work with Marriott has opened the doors to many opportunities. I have been able to work in amazing countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Spain. I was selected as an opening trainer several times, helping to open hotels around the world including the USA, Puerto Rico, Germany and Turkey. During that journey I have been able to organize key worldwide events such as IMF/World Bank meeting, Royal Weddings and so on.
Do you like sticking to a routine? Or going with the flow?
From both a personal and professional point of view, I like a mix of both. I think planning and having a routine is important but in the hospitality business, you always need to be open to unexpected situations, new challenges and experiences.
If you could pick one place anywhere in the world to be your dream destination, where would it be?
I think is difficult to choose just one place. I like exploring new destinations and getting to know new cultures. What definitely has changed over the years is that 20 years ago, my preference would have been a big city and an active vacation, while now I enjoy peace, quiet and more natural settings. I am fortunate to live in a paradise that gives me all what I enjoy.
What do you do for fun during your day off?
On my days off I enjoy spending time with my family, my wife and two daughters 7 and 4. In between, I always find the time to run along the beautiful Nusa Dua beachfront. Finally, food is one of my passions and Bali has a great variety of restaurants… so I love going with my wife and friends to explore new restaurants and culinary trends on the island.
