INTERVIEW WITH MR. HENGKY TAMBAYONG, GENERAL MANAGER OF HARRIS HOTEL SEMINYAK BALI

Hi, Mr. Hengky could you please tell us a little about yourself?

Hello my name is Hengky Tambayong and was born in Malang on May 13. My dad is from Manado and my mom is from Surabaya. I’m single in a way….. far… couples kilometers from home. Nah, I’m just kidding. I have a beautiful wife and an 18-year old son.

How long have you been working for TAUZIA Management?

I started at 2005 so I think it’s almost 11 years.

You stepped up as the General Manager of HARRIS Hotel Seminyak Bali, did you accomplish what you wanted to?

To be honest, yes of course. In my opinion this is like an assignment because once this hotel was not going right as it’s supposed to be, then I think the management sent me here to set things right. Well that’s the way I see it. With the support and help of our dedicated team here, I can say that I’ve accomplished what I wanted to along with the reason why I came here at the first place.

What kind of challenges that you need to face as the General Manager of HARRIS Hotel Seminyak Bali? How did you deal with that?

I have lived in Bali since 2006 and now it’s totally different. Working in a hospitality especially hotel industry nowadays is very challenging because new hotels are opening up everywhere around Bali and I believe that it won’t stop. So what I need to do is something no longer out of the box, but it must be out of a container. Attracting consumers not only with the service and facilities because that is what all hotels are doing now, but also I need to create the feeling about being happy, comfortable, or even beyond those feelings. Something that they never imagined before. I need to engage the consumers, as well as the staffs.

What can people in business expect from The Best Performing General Manager of TAUZIA Management 2015?

Well, first of all I need to thank God and all of my staffs here. I always think that, you have to be a role model for people to look up to, people can make you as a good example. I believe that leadership is not about position but how you lead by example. So if I want to be a good leader I need to give good examples. I am doing all the things here with my passion, according to logic and common sense. I put my efforts here and push my limit so people will see the outputs, and I’ve already proved that.

What is your biggest regret in your career?

I am a plan maker; I love to plan everything perfectly. I planned to work in a hotel industry since junior high school when my parents took me to a hotel and I thought that working in a hotel was pretty much cool. So I studied about hotel, hospitality, tourism and everything. I can say that I have no regret about my career because I’ve planned everything since the beginning.

What is your biggest weakness?

I am a perfectionist person. I want everything to look and be perfect. I love to make things right. I am a dominant person and always want to control everything, so this might be my weakness sometimes. Oh yes, and I can’t deal with stupid people but they are everywhere so this is also another weaknesses.
